Every job candidate has likely found themselves in an awkward situation during an interview at least once in their career. Sometimes, potential employers ask questions that go beyond professional etiquette and even violate data protection laws. Some examples of unethical questions include:

  • Questions about pregnancy or marital status.
  • Political or religious views.
  • Union or party membership.
  • Health status.

But mistakes aren't made only by employers. Candidates can also risk lowering their chances of employment if they ask inappropriate questions.

What questions can leave a bad impression?

  1. What does your company do? This question shows that the candidate hasn't done their homework. A motivated candidate should already have researched the company before the first interview.
  2. When can I take vacation? This question may give the impression that the candidate is more interested in the perks of the job than the job itself. It's better to discuss such details later in the process, closer to contract signing.
  3. What salary can I expect? While salary is an important factor, openly discussing it early on can signal a lack of motivation for the actual work. It's better to wait until the employer brings up compensation.
  4. How quickly can I get a promotion? This question may seem overly calculating and suggest that the candidate isn't interested in the initial role.
  5. What are my chances of getting this job? This question may put the interviewer in an awkward position. If the candidate has made it to the next stage, their chances are already high.
  6. Financial stability of the company Questions about the company's debts, competitors, or economic standing may seem doubtful. It's better to ask neutrally, for example: “What are the company’s plans for development over the next five years?”
  7. Additional benefits Questions about private offices, company cars, bonuses, or remote work should only be discussed once the employer brings up the topic.
